So progress has be a little slow currently on the Europa. It has mostly been banging out U-joints, unfreezing caliper pistons, Injecting foam, sanding, cutting ect. First Major Part done was the transmission was cleaned up and repainted.

Kinja'd!!!

Nope I did not pick the color...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Next up was the disassembly of the front brake calipers. The pistons were pretty rusted in place and took a lot of beating and pushing with a grease gun.

Kinja'd!!!

Rust

Kinja'd!!!

Its apart. New pistons came with the rebuild kit

The Rear suspension and axles were busted apart, stripped and painted

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And some experiments with structural foam were done. This is going to be injected into a lot of the open space in the body of the Europa to add rigidity and safety support.

Kinja'd!!!

And my favorite part was I did some test sprays of the paint color that I chose for it. I still have to find a good yellow for the stripes, bonus points if anyone figures out what car the paint is from.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Yes I know my spray job is not great, I kind of rushed it to get it done.

Tune in next time for some more sporadic updates.

Where are you sourcing your foam?

I will have to ask my dad where he ordered it from, it works pretty well. I am going to use it to seal the rocker panels in my Mali.

I too have some Questionable Automotive Uses For Foam in my future, and the best deal on two-part foam I’ve found so far is at Fiberglast. I like to know all my options, though.

The important things in my case would be some level of temp resistance, good adhesion, closed cell, and water resistance. All of which pretty much says marine polyurethane instead of some of the others. Fiberglast has a 2lb and I think a 6lb, and I think I’m reading your bottles correctly to say 3lb.

Very nice :) I’ve heard a bit recently about structural foam to stiffen box sections. It’s a really good idea, providing you don’t end up with rust due to capillary action pulling water in.

To stiffen the chassis on my Spitfire project I’m going a different tack. I’ll be welding the body to the chassis to make a sort of semi-monocoque (like a big Healey). Structural foam would probably do much better job, but from a cost and weight perspective using a structure that’s already there makes sense for me :)

Are there any stats around for chassis stiffness on a Europa? Any idea how much stiffness the foam will add?

That green looks a whole lot like the “Antique Green” on my ‘71 Chevelle but I’m sure it’s not
